Dust motes danced in the lone ray of sunlight slicing through the attic window. Sarah dragged a hand across her forehead, smudging the grime of weeks spent neglecting herself. Her brother, David, was already there, meticulously cataloging the dusty relics of their grandfather’s life. "Anything interesting?" she mumbled, her voice thick with disuse.

David didn't look up, too absorbed in a leather-bound book. “Just the usual – old bills, some letters… Seems Grandpa was quite the… collector of mundane things.” He gestured with a dismissive flick of the wrist.

Sarah stumbled upon a small, wooden box tucked away in a shadowed corner. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, was a silver locket. She lifted it, feeling the chill metal against her skin. It opened with a click, revealing a miniature portrait of a woman she didn’t recognize, and a tiny, handwritten note. It read, "My dearest Evelyn, Always." A strange, insistent ache throbbed in her chest.
